Approximately 3,000 exhibitors in 19 filled exhibition halls, some 150,000 m² of display area, and more than 123,000 visitors from 90 nations—these are numbers that issued from the Düsseldorf Fairgrounds at the beginning of April when METAV 2008, the international trade fair for manufacturing technology and automation, took place in conjunction with Wire 2008, the international wire and cable trade fair, and Tube 2008, the international trade fair for tubing.
Over the week of March 31 to April 4, METAV itself attracted more than 51,000 trade visitors from 41 countries. The 842 METAV exhibitors occupied 54,000 m² of exhibition space. Dr. Detlev Elsinghorst, chairman of the METAV committee, reported that the visitor numbers increased steadily during the show week. And, he added, “the exhibitors expect that their business will continue to develop favourably during the current year because of their exposure at METAV.” In the judgment of the METAV chairman, with the success of this year’s edition, the fair “confirms its position as most important business platform for the metal-processing industry.”
The industry’s willingness to invest appeared to be greater than ever before. According to the METAV visitor survey, 37% of show visitors arrived in Düsseldorf intending to make purchases, primarily of machine tools. About a fifth of them placed orders during the event or expected to do so, and nearly 60% said they planned to make purchase commitments after the fair’s close.
The METAV chairman attributed the eagerness to place orders to the current high utilization of production capacity. “Investors want to place their orders early in order to remain able to deliver to their own customers, despite long delivery terms,” he explained.
About a tenth of METAV 2008 visitors came from abroad. Of these, four-fifths hailed from Europe and the rest from overseas, mainly from the USA and Brazil. Forty percent of all visitors were attending METAV for the first time. The survey revealed that more than 93% of visitors achieved their goals for the fair. Some 95% assessed this year’s event as very good or good.
The date for METAV 2010 has not been set. The organizers of the three fairs—Messe Düsseldorf for Wire and Tube, and the VDW (the German Machine Tool Builders’ Association) for METAV—will schedule the next edition once they have analyzed the results of exhibitor and visitor surveys from the 2008 meeting.
