Micron: DRAM shortage will continue until 2022

Yesterday, Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra stated at COMPUTEX 2021 Virtual that with the growth of 5G, artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, automotive electronics, Internet of Things and other markets, the demand for storage and computing has greatly increased, which has become a driving force to promote the growth trend of the memory chip market. He predicts that the short supply of DRAM will continue until 2022. In addition, the shortage of NAND Flash will gradually improve.

Sanjay Mehrotra said that taking 5G mobile phones as an example, about 250 million units were sold globally last year, and research institutes estimate that it will double to 500 million units this year. In addition, the capacity of DRAM and NAND Flash installed in mobile phones is also increasing.

Micron is the world’s third largest DRAM and fifth largest NAND Flash manufacturer. The company has a global market share of more than 20% in the DRAM market and more than 10% of the global NAND Flash market.
